The Study on Health Status and Health-welfare NeeThe Need of the Aged in Rural Community

Abstract
With extension of life expectancy and increase of aged population, the health and welfare affairs of the aged became main concerns of the elderly. The purpose of this study was to confirm relationship living conditions with self-reported health, mental health and welfare need of the aged in the rural community. Especially the study was conducted to examine living conditions, self-reported health, mental health, health and welfare need of 192 aged people. Data were collected from December, 2003 through February, 2004 for three months by structured questionnaire. The questionnaires included items about socioeconomic status, living conditions, health related issues and health and welfare need. The results of this study were summarized as follows. The health status of the aged was examine in self-reported health, stress, depression. In the self-reported health, 39.1% had ¡¯bad health status¡¯ and in ADL level, ¡¯moderate dependency¡¯ level were 24.5% and ¡¯severe dependency¡¯ level were 18.8%. Stress and depression problem of the aged was serious; ¡¯Potential stress group¡¯ was 59.7% and ¡¯high risk stress group¡¯ was 33.5%. 84.8% of the aged had depression problem. ¡¯Couples¡¯ had higher ADL level than other groups. In other hands, lower income group, especially below 500 thousands won, had the lowest ADL level. In addition, ¡¯single¡¯ and ¡¯living alone¡¯ group had more depression problem than other groups. Self- reported health as expected was bad in lower income group and we knew health inequality also exist in the aged. The relationship health status with health and welfare need is statistically insignificant. But health and welfare need tended to increase by lower income group, living without husband. The depression level tended to increase with health and welfare need on the increase. Health and welfare need has reduced by age increased. For the health promotion of the aged in rural community, intervention program of stress and depression should be provided with strategies for decreasing health and welfare need.
